§ 26486 City Annexation Completion

Key Takeaways

  • •When a city and a district agree to join together, they sign a paper called an 'agreement of annexation'.
  • •The district's leaders must then officially say 'yes' to this agreement by passing a resolution.
  • •After they say 'yes', they must send a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of State.
  • •Once the Secretary of State gets this copy, the city is officially part of the district.

Example

Imagine your small town, Sunnyville, wants to join the bigger school district next door so your kids can go to their schools.

Sunnyville and the school district sign a paper saying they agree to join. Then, the school district's leaders vote and say 'yes' to this. They send a copy of their 'yes' vote to the Secretary of State. Once the Secretary of State gets it, Sunnyville is officially part of the school district.
