§ 13854 Annexation Election Approval Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •If most people vote 'yes' on annexation, it passes.
  • •If the annexation makes a city take on the district's debt, then two-thirds of voters must say 'yes' for it to pass.
  • •The rules about votes and debt are from a law made in 1951.

Example

A small town wants to join a nearby city. The city agrees to take on the town's old debts if they join.

For the town to join the city, at least two-thirds of the voters must vote 'yes' because the city is taking on the town's debt.
