§ 215 National Guard Service Credit

This law says that if you served in the U.S. military (like the Army or Air Force), that time counts toward your California National Guard retirement too. It treats your federal service like it was state service for retirement benefits.

Key Takeaways

  • •Your time in the U.S. military counts toward California National Guard retirement.
  • •Both full-time and part-time service in the federal military are included.
  • •This helps you get more retirement pay by combining both federal and state service.

Example

A person serves 5 years in the U.S. Army and then joins the California National Guard for 10 years.

When they retire, all 15 years (5 federal + 10 state) count toward their California National Guard retirement pay.

How to Calculate

Total retirement service = Federal service years + State service years

  1. Add up all the years you served in the U.S. military (Army, Air Force, Navy, etc.).
  2. Add up all the years you served in the California National Guard.
  3. Combine both numbers to get your total retirement service time.

A person served 3 years in the U.S. Navy and 7 years in the California National Guard.

Result: Total retirement service = 3 + 7 = 10 years
