§ 106 Disability Insurance Coverage

This law tells us what counts as disability insurance and what counts as health insurance, and it lists many kinds of insurance that are NOT called health insurance. It also defines a special kind of health insurance that only covers one area like teeth or eyes.

Key Takeaways

  • •Disability insurance covers injuries, illnesses, or death from accidents or sickness.
  • •Health insurance means a disability policy that actually pays for hospital, medical, or surgery costs.
  • •Many policies – like accidental death only, cash‑only disability, workers’ comp, long‑term care, etc. – are NOT called health insurance.
  • •A “specialized health insurance policy” is one that only covers one type of care, such as dental, vision, or mental health.

Example

Jane buys a policy that pays her a set amount of money if she gets hurt in an accident, but it doesn't cover hospital or doctor bills.

Because Jane's policy only gives a cash payment and doesn't cover medical care, the law says it is NOT health insurance, just disability insurance.
