§ 43212 Vehicle Emission Penalty Enforcement

Key Takeaways

  • •If a car company sells a car in California that doesn't meet the state's pollution rules, they can be fined up to $37,500 for each car that breaks the rules.
  • •The fine amount can go up over time because of inflation, based on California's cost of living.
  • •The company might have to pay the fine and fix the cars to follow the rules before they can sell more cars in California.
  • •All the money from these fines goes into a special fund called the Air Pollution Control Fund.

Example

A car company sells 10 cars in California that don't meet the pollution rules.

The company could be fined up to $37,500 for each of those 10 cars. So, they might have to pay $375,000 in total. They also have to fix those cars to meet the rules before selling more cars in California.
