§ 41953 Floating Roof Tank Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •A floating roof is a special kind of cover that sits on top of liquid in a big tank, like gasoline, and has a seal to keep the liquid from escaping.
  • •This rule does not apply if the liquid in the tank has a very high pressure (11.0 pounds per square inch or more).
  • •All tools used to measure or take samples from the tank must be tightly sealed to prevent gas leaks, except when they are actually being used.

Example

Imagine a big gas tank at a gas station. The tank has a special cover that floats on top of the gasoline inside.

This cover must have a good seal around the edges to keep the gasoline fumes from escaping. Also, any tools used to check the gasoline level must be tightly closed when not in use to prevent leaks.

The control equipment required by this section shall not be used if the gasoline or petroleum distillate has a vapor pressure of 11.0 pounds per square inch absolute or greater under actual storage conditions. All tank gauging and sampling devices shall be gastight except when gauging or sampling is taking place. (Added by Stats. 1975, Ch. 957.)
