§ 13849 Petition Notice Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Before asking people to sign a petition about changing the district's board, the leaders must tell everyone their plan by putting a notice in the local newspaper.
  • •The notice must be short (500 words or less) and explain why they want the change.
  • •If the district covers more than one county, the notice must be in a newspaper in each county.
  • •Within 5 days after the notice is in the newspaper, the leaders must give a copy of it and proof it was published to the district board.

Example

A group of people in a school district want to change how the school board works. They want to collect signatures to make this happen.

Before they can start asking people to sign their petition, they must first put a notice in the local newspaper explaining their plan. They have to do this in every county the school district covers. After the notice is published, they have 5 days to give a copy of it and proof it was published to the school board. Only then can they start collecting signatures.
