§ 13816 District Formation Petition Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •To create a new district, you need to write a petition (a formal request).
  • •The petition must include things like the district's name, boundaries, how it will be paid for, and why it's needed.
  • •You also need to name up to three people in charge of the petition and say how the first leaders will be chosen.
  • •The petition must check if the new district fits with plans of nearby cities or districts.

Example

A group of neighbors wants to create a new school district in their area.

They write a petition that includes the name of the new district, where its boundaries will be, how it will get money (like taxes), and why they need it (maybe the current schools are too far). They also name three people in charge of the petition and say how the first school board will be picked. If they miss any of these details, the petition might not work.
