§ 110840 Organic Product Recordkeeping Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Anyone who sells or handles organic products must keep detailed records of where the product came from, where it went, and how much was sold or bought.
  • •If you sell organic products, the papers (like receipts or shipping documents) must clearly say the product is 'organic' or 'certified organic'.
  • •You must also keep track of any chemicals or pesticides used on or near the organic products, including what they are, how much was used, and when.
  • •These records must be kept for at least 1 to 3 years, depending on whether you are a farmer, seller, or store, and must be shown if an inspector asks to see them.

Example

A grocery store sells organic apples.

The store must keep records of who they bought the apples from, how many they bought, and when. They must also make sure that any receipts or delivery papers say the apples are 'organic'. If they use any sprays or chemicals near the apples, they have to write down what it was, how much they used, and when. These records must be kept for at least one year and shown to an inspector if asked.
