Key Takeaways

  • •You can get official copies of birth, death, or marriage records by asking and paying a fee.
  • •Some private info on birth certificates won’t be on the copy you get.
  • •The government must follow other rules about who can get these records.

Example

You need a copy of your birth certificate to get a passport.

You can ask the government office for a certified copy, pay the fee, and they must give it to you. If your birth certificate has a section marked 'Confidential,' that part won’t be on your copy.
