§ 102100 Vital Records Registration Rules

This law says that every birth, fetal death, death, marriage, and court‑ordered divorce or separation in California must be recorded on official forms, and the details on those records are kept private and not open to the public.

Key Takeaways

  • •Every birth, fetal death, death, marriage, and court‑ordered divorce or separation must be filed on the state’s official forms.
  • •These filings go to the State Registrar.
  • •The information on those certificates and reports is exempt from the California Public Records Act, so it stays private.

Example

A couple gets married in Los Angeles and later files for divorce.

They must fill out the state‑provided marriage certificate and later file the divorce decree with the State Registrar. All the personal details on those papers stay confidential and can't be requested under the public records law.
