§ 100505 Berkeley Property Reuse

This law says the state wants to make the most of the building at 2151 Berkeley Way after the health department moves out, so it can be used by the University of California and help the city’s economy.

Key Takeaways

  • •The state wants to use its property fully.
  • •The health department will move from 2151 Berkeley Way to a new site in Richmond.
  • •UC should be able to put programs close to its Berkeley campus.
  • •The old building should be reused in a way that boosts the city’s economy.

Example

The State Department of Health Services finishes a new hospital in Richmond and leaves the old building in Berkeley empty.

Because the law says the state should reuse that building to help the city and let UC put programs nearby, the state might let the university turn the empty space into classrooms or labs, which would bring jobs and activity to the neighborhood.
