§ 860 Mate Succession Rights

Key Takeaways

  • •The mate is the second-in-command on a ship, right below the captain.
  • •If the captain can't do their job, the mate takes over as captain.
  • •Even after becoming captain, the mate keeps all their original rights as a mate.

Example

Imagine you're on a fishing boat. The captain gets sick and can't work.

The first mate (the captain's helper) becomes the new captain until the old captain is better. The first mate still gets all the same pay and rights they had before.
