§ 66337 Junior Adu Fire Safety Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •A small extra home (junior accessory dwelling unit) inside a house doesn't count as a new separate home for fire safety rules.
  • •Local governments can make fire safety rules for houses with these small extra homes, but the rules must be the same for all houses in the area, even if they don’t have the extra home.
  • •The rules must treat all single-family houses equally, whether they have the small extra home or not.

Example

You add a small apartment in your garage for your grandma to live in.

The city can’t treat your house differently just because of the garage apartment when making fire safety rules. If they require smoke alarms in all houses, they can’t make extra rules just for your house because of the apartment.
