§ 57144 Special Election Analysis Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •After a special election is called, the leader must write a fair explanation of what the vote is about within 5 days.
  • •This explanation can't be longer than 500 words and must include a simple description of the area affected.
  • •A group checks and approves this explanation, then sends it to the election office before the deadline for arguments against it.
  • •The explanation must have a clear note at the end telling people how to get a free copy of the full proposal.

Example

A small town wants to vote on becoming its own city.

The town leader has to write a short, fair summary of what becoming a city means. This summary is checked by a group, then sent to the election office. At the end of the summary, there’s a note with a phone number so people can call and get the full details for free.
