§ 57135 Tax And Fee Disclosure Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If a new rule or change makes people pay more taxes, fees, or charges, the vote question must say what the extra cost is for and how much it might be.
  • •The vote question doesn’t need to mention regular yearly taxes or normal fees that keep things running like usual.
  • •If they add a short summary of the costs to the vote question, they must also say people can read the full details in the official order.

Example

A town wants to add a new fee to pay for better street lights.

The vote question must say there’s a new fee for street lights and tell people to check the official paper for the exact amount. It doesn’t need to mention the regular taxes people already pay for things like trash pickup.
