§ 54356 Local Agency Lien Enforcement

Key Takeaways

  • •If you don't pay fees or penalties you owe to a local agency, they can take you to court.
  • •The agency can add a lien (a legal claim) on your property to get the money you owe.
  • •If the agency wins in court, you have to pay their lawyer fees too.

Example

You own a house but refuse to pay your garbage collection fees for years.

The city can take you to court to force you to pay. If they win, they can put a lien on your house, meaning you can't sell it without paying what you owe. You'll also have to pay the city's lawyer fees.
