§ 53040 Public Record Reconstruction Rights

Key Takeaways

  • •If important papers (like property records) get destroyed in a fire or big disaster, the local government can get copies from businesses that keep these records.
  • •The government can get these copies by buying, leasing, or even taking them if needed.
  • •This only applies to local governments, not the state government.

Example

A big fire burns down a city hall, and all the property records are lost.

The city can go to a company that keeps copies of these records and get what they need to replace what was lost.
