Key Takeaways

  • •The city can ask voters if they want to elect a mayor and four council members.
  • •Voters can also decide if the mayor's term should be 2 years or 4 years.
  • •If the city already has an elected mayor, voters can still choose to change the mayor's term length.

Example

Your town currently has a mayor elected for 2 years, but some people think 4 years would be better.

The city council can put this question on the ballot during an election. Voters will decide if they want to keep the 2-year term or switch to a 4-year term for the mayor.
