§ 32340 Military Service Contribution Refunds

Key Takeaways

  • •If you were in the military and paid into the county retirement system during that time, you can get that money back.
  • •If you took out your retirement money while in the military and didn’t put it back after returning to your county job, the county can still help by adding money to your retirement account for the time you were away.
  • •The county’s extra money can only be used for retirement or if you get disabled—you can’t take it out if you quit your job later.
  • •If you quit after coming back from the military, you only get back the money you personally put in, not the county’s extra help.

Example

John was a county firefighter but left to serve in the military for 2 years. While serving, he took out his retirement savings. When he returned, he didn’t put the money back.

The county can still add money to John’s retirement account for the 2 years he was in the military, even though he took his money out. But if John quits later, he only gets back what he personally paid in, not the county’s extra money.
