§ 32337 Military Leave Firefighter Rights

Key Takeaways

  • •If you work as a forester, firewarden, or firefighter and then join the military during a war or emergency, you can keep your job benefits if you come back within 90 days after your military service ends.
  • •You must pay back the money you would have paid into the fund while you were in the military, either while you're away or within one year after you return (plus up to two extra years if the board allows it).
  • •This rule helps you keep your job and benefits even if you had to leave for military service.

Example

John works as a firefighter. He joins the Army during a war and serves for 2 years. When he comes back, he returns to his firefighter job within 90 days.

John can keep his firefighter job benefits as if he never left, but he must pay back the money he would have paid into the fund while he was in the Army. He has up to one year (plus maybe two more years if allowed) to pay it back.
