§ 29125 Budget Transfer Approval Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Moving money between different funds or from the emergency fund needs a big vote (four-fifths of the board must agree).
  • •Moving money between departments in the same fund (without adding more money) only needs most of the board to agree (majority vote).
  • •The board can let a manager or auditor move money between departments in the same fund, as long as no extra money is added.

Example

A school wants to move money from the 'sports equipment' fund to the 'computer lab' fund.

Since this is moving money between different funds, the school board must have a big vote where at least four-fifths of them agree. If they just wanted to move money between two departments in the same fund (like from 'math books' to 'science books'), only half the board plus one would need to agree.
