§ 23701 County Charter Commission Elections

• •A county can start making or changing its rules (charter) by having its leaders vote on it.
• •If the leaders agree, they say the county needs to pick 15 people to help write the new rules.
• •These 15 people are chosen by the voters in the county during an election.
• •Regular people in the county can also ask for new rules by signing a petition.

Imagine your town wants to change how its local government works.

The town leaders can vote to start the process. If they agree, they’ll let the townspeople vote for 15 people to help write the new rules. Or, if enough people in the town sign a paper asking for changes, that can start the process too.
