§ 23249 County Boundary Change Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •When a county's borders change, the state decides how to fairly split any money owed by the counties involved.
  • •The state checks how the border change will affect each county's money and if they can still pay their bills.
  • •The state makes sure the new county lines are clear and plans how services (like schools and roads) will switch to the new county smoothly.
  • •Both counties are split into 5 equal areas based on population, and existing school and road areas are kept as much as possible.

Example

Imagine two counties, County A and County B, want to change their borders so some land moves from County A to County B.

The state will decide how to split any debts between the two counties, check if both can still afford their services, and make sure the new border lines are fair. They’ll also plan how things like schools and roads will be handled in the new areas.
