§ 21583 1959 Survivor Allowance Election

Key Takeaways

  • •If you're a local member, you can choose to get the 1959 survivor allowance within 90 days of the new contract starting.
  • •You have to pay $2 for every month since you were first eligible for this allowance.
  • •Your boss (contracting agency) has to agree to this rule first before you can use it.
  • •This rule doesn’t apply if your job is part of the federal system.

Example

Imagine you work for a city and they update your work contract. You find out you can get a special benefit called the '1959 survivor allowance' for your family if something happens to you.

You have 90 days to say 'yes' to this benefit. If you do, you’ll have to pay $2 for every month since you were first allowed to get it. But your city has to agree to offer this first, and it doesn’t count if you work for the federal government.
