§ 21411 Disability Retirement Benefits

Key Takeaways

  • •If a state safety worker (like a police officer or firefighter) gets hurt on the job and can't work anymore, they get money to help them live.
  • •They get half of their last paycheck as disability money.
  • •If they also saved extra money in a special account, they get that too.
  • •If they could retire normally (because they worked long enough), they might get more money that way instead.

Example

A firefighter gets badly hurt while putting out a fire and can't work anymore.

The firefighter will get half of their last paycheck every month. If they also saved extra money in a special account, they get that too. If they worked long enough to retire normally, they might get more money that way instead.
