§ 21072 State Service Credit Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •If you choose to follow Section 21076, you get free credit for past state jobs after working one year under Section 21076.
  • •If you quit your job and come back later, you get your old service credit back for free after working one more year. But if you're disabled and meet the rules, you don't have to wait that one year.
  • •If you choose to follow Section 21077, quit, and come back, you also get your old service credit back for free after working one year. Again, if you're disabled, you might not have to wait.
  • •You have to ask for this credit and tell the board which times you worked. This rule stopped working on January 1, 2000.

Example

Imagine you worked for the state for 2 years, then quit. Later, you come back and work for another year. After that year, you get your 2 years of old work added to your record for free.

This law lets you get credit for past state jobs without paying extra, but you have to work a year first when you return. If you're disabled, you might get it right away.
