§ 20505 Probationary Employee Membership

Key Takeaways

  • •If you start a new job with the government on or after January 1, 1992, you automatically join the retirement system right away.
  • •Even if you're in a trial period (like a new worker being tested), you still get to join the retirement system if you're eligible.
  • •Your boss can't say 'no' just because you're still being tested as a new worker.

Example

You get hired as a new teacher at a public school in 1995.

Even if the school says you're on a trial period for your first 6 months, you still get to join the retirement system right when you start.
