§ 20476 Ordinance Resolution Substitution

Key Takeaways

  • •If a law says something must be done by 'ordinance,' it can usually be done by 'resolution' instead.
  • •This rule doesn’t apply to cities and counties—they have to follow the original rule.
  • •A 'resolution' is like a quick decision, while an 'ordinance' is a bigger, more formal rule.

Example

A small town wants to change how often trash is picked up. The law says they need an 'ordinance' to do this.

Instead of going through the long process of making an ordinance, the town can just pass a resolution to change the trash pickup schedule. But if this were a city or county, they’d have to follow the original rule and make an ordinance.
