§ 19883 Employee Benefits During Leave

Key Takeaways

  • •If you get disability or family leave benefits, money for things like health insurance can still be taken from your paycheck unless you cancel it.
  • •You won’t earn retirement credits or get sick/vacation time while on disability leave.
  • •If your work has a special agreement (like a union contract), that might change these rules, but only if the government approves it.

Example

You break your leg and go on disability leave from your state job.

Your health insurance payments will still come out of your disability pay unless you stop them. You also won’t earn sick days or retirement points while you’re out.
