§ 17270 Warrant Payment Legal Tender

Key Takeaways

  • •Warrants (like checks from the government) must be paid in U.S. money that is legal to use.
  • •The government must write on each warrant that it can only be paid with U.S. money.
  • •No other type of money (like foreign coins or cryptocurrency) can be used to pay these warrants.

Example

You get a check from the government for a tax refund.

The check must say it can only be paid in U.S. dollars, not in Bitcoin or Mexican pesos. If you try to cash it, the bank will only give you U.S. money.
