Key Takeaways

  • •If someone owes the state money and their stuff is already sold or has a lien on it, the state can buy it back to get their money.
  • •The Attorney General and the Department of General Services work together to do this.
  • •The state uses special money set aside just for this purpose.

Example

Imagine someone owes the state money for unpaid taxes, but their house is already sold because of another debt.

The state can step in and buy back that house to get the money they are owed. They use a special fund to do this, and the Attorney General helps make it happen.
