§ 15304 Federal Credit Union Conversion

This law lets a credit union become a federal credit union after its members vote for it, and once it files the federal charter with the state, it stops being a state credit union.

Key Takeaways

  • •Members must approve the change before it can happen.
  • •The credit union must file the federal charter with the state within 10 days of receiving it.
  • •Once filed, the credit union becomes a federal credit union and is no longer a state credit union.

Example

A local credit union's members decide to switch to a federal credit union, they receive the federal charter, and within 10 days they file a copy of that charter with the state Secretary of State.

After the filing, the credit union is no longer treated as a state credit union and operates as a federal credit union.
