§ 8226 Salmon Tagging Head Relinquishment

Key Takeaways

  • •If you catch a salmon without its small back fin (adipose fin), you must give its head to a fish and game officer if they ask for it. They need it to check for a tiny tag inside.
  • •The officer will cut off the head carefully so you don’t lose much fish meat, then give the rest of the salmon back to you.
  • •You cannot hide, throw away, or put back in the water a salmon without this fin if it’s legal to keep.

Example

You catch a salmon while fishing, and you notice it’s missing the small fin on its back. A game warden comes up and asks for the fish’s head.

You have to hand over the head so the warden can check for a tiny tag inside. The warden will cut it off neatly and give the rest of the fish back to you. If you try to hide or throw the fish back, you’re breaking the law.

§ 8226 Salmon Tagging Head Relinquishment

(a) Notwithstanding any measurement requirements under this code, and to implement the department’s salmon tagging program, any person in possession of a salmon with a missing adipose fin, the small, fleshy fin on the back of the fish between the back fin and the tail, upon request by an authorized agent or employee of the department, shall immediately relinquish the head of the salmon to the state, at no charge, for recovery of any coded-wire tag. The head may be removed by the fish owner or, if removed by the official department representative, the head shall be removed in a manner to minimize loss of salmon flesh and the salmon shall immediately be returned to the rightful owner. (b) It is unlawful to intentionally conceal, cull, or release into the waters, a salmon with a missing adipose fin that it is otherwise legal to possess. (Amended by Stats. 1999, Ch. 502, Sec. 2. Effective September 27, 1999.)
