§ 12155 Hunting License Revocation Rules

If you are caught breaking hunting rules three times in five years, you lose the right to hunt for three years and your hunting license is taken away.

Key Takeaways

  • •Three hunting violations in a five‑year window trigger a three‑year hunting ban.
  • •The ban starts on the date of the most recent conviction.
  • •During the ban you cannot get or try to get a new hunting license.

Example

John was caught hunting illegally in 2020, 2022, and 2024. All three convictions happened within a five‑year span.

Because John has three convictions in five years, the law says he cannot hunt any bird or mammal for three years starting from his last conviction in 2024, and his hunting license is revoked for that time.

How to Calculate

If (Number of convictions for hunting violations in the past 5 years) ≥ 3, then hunting prohibition = 3 years from the date of the last conviction.

  1. Count how many hunting‑related convictions the person has had in the last five years.
  2. If the count is three or more, the person is prohibited from taking any bird or mammal.
  3. The prohibition lasts for three years starting on the date of the most recent conviction.
  4. The hunting commission revokes the person’s hunting license for the whole three‑year period.

Emily was convicted of illegal hunting in March 2021, July 2022, and November 2023.

Result: Emily is barred from hunting any bird or mammal from Nov 2023 through Nov 2026, and her hunting license is revoked for that time.
