§ 10906 South Laguna Marine Refuge

This law creates a protected area in the ocean near South Laguna Beach where marine life is safe from harm.

Key Takeaways

  • •This law protects a specific area of ocean near South Laguna Beach.
  • •You can't harm or take marine life from this protected zone.
  • •The boundaries are marked using specific angles and distances from known points.

Example

If you go fishing or diving near South Laguna Beach, you might be in a protected area where you can't take or hurt sea creatures.

The law sets boundaries for this safe zone, so you need to check if you're inside it before doing anything that could harm marine life.

How to Calculate

The boundaries are described using specific lines and angles, such as 'South 48° 50´ 00″ West' and distances like 'approximately 600 feet'.

  1. Start at the point where the high tide line meets a line that goes South 48° 50´ 00″ West from the western edge of Lot 75.
  2. Go South 48° 50´ 00″ West for about 600 feet until you reach the -20 foot mean lower low water line.
  3. Follow the shoreline in a southeasterly direction until you hit the northern edge of the Niguel Marine Life Refuge.
  4. Turn and go North 35° 57´ 06″ East until you reach the high tide line again.
  5. Follow the high tide line back to where you started.

Imagine you're standing at the western edge of Lot 75 in South Laguna Beach.

Result: The area enclosed by these lines is the South Laguna Beach Marine Life Refuge.
