§ 8701 Birth Parent Adoption Updates

Key Takeaways

  • •Birth parents can ask for updates about their child's adoption anytime after signing papers.
  • •They can find out if the child was adopted, when it happened, or if the adoption didn't work out.
  • •They won't get the adoptive family's personal info, like names or addresses.

Example

A mom gives her baby up for adoption and signs the papers. Years later, she wonders if the adoption went through.

She can call the adoption agency and ask if the baby was adopted, when it happened, or if the adoption fell through. But she can't get the new family's phone number or where they live.

The birth parent shall be advised that this information includes, but is not limited to, all of the following: (a) Whether the child has been placed for adoption. (b) The approximate date that an adoption was completed. (c) If the adoption was not completed or was vacated, for any reason, whether adoptive placement of the child is again being considered.
