Key Takeaways

  • •Adoptive parents or the adopted child can ask the court for a special paper called a 'certificate of adoption'.
  • •This paper shows the child's new name, birthday, where and when the adoption happened, and the names of the adoptive parents.
  • •If the child is not adopted by a stepparent or a close family member, the paper will not show the birth parents' names.

Example

A couple adopts a baby and wants a special paper to show their family and friends.

They can ask the court for a certificate of adoption. This paper will have the baby's new name, birthday, and the parents' names. It won't have the birth parents' names because the baby is not adopted by a stepparent or a close family member.
