§ 7140 Emancipated Minor Dmv Records

Key Takeaways

  • •If a kid under 18 is legally declared independent (emancipated), they can ask the DMV to update their records.
  • •The DMV will add a note to their system and print 'emancipated' on the kid’s ID card.
  • •This helps cops and others know the kid is legally treated as an adult in some ways.

Example

A 16-year-old gets emancipated and wants to prove they can sign a lease.

They go to the DMV, show their court papers, and get an ID that says 'emancipated.' Now landlords can see they’re legally allowed to rent an apartment.
