§ 7122 Minor Emancipation Declaration

Key Takeaways

  • •A kid can ask a judge to be treated like an adult (emancipated) if they prove they can handle it.
  • •The judge will say yes only if it’s good for the kid.
  • •If the judge says yes, the kid gets a paper saying they’re emancipated, and that paper is proof.

Example

A 16-year-old wants to move out and live on their own because they have a job and can pay rent.

The kid can ask a judge to say they’re emancipated. If the judge agrees it’s best for them, the kid gets a paper saying they’re officially on their own. That paper means they can do adult things like sign a lease.
