§ 79240 Commission Member Term Lengths

Key Takeaways

  • •Commission members and alternates serve for 2 years, except the first group.
  • •For the first group, half serve 1 year and half serve 2 years.
  • •Who serves 1 year and who serves 2 years is decided by random chance (like drawing names from a hat).
  • •This rule started on January 1, 2010.

Example

Imagine a school club with 10 new members. The first year, 5 members are picked randomly to serve for 1 year, and the other 5 serve for 2 years. After that, all new members serve for 2 years.

The law says the first group of commission members has some people serving 1 year and some serving 2 years, decided by luck. After that, everyone serves 2 years.
