§ 53481 Nursery Stock Labeling Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Plants sold in stores must have clear labels with their correct names.
  • •Different plants have different naming rules (e.g., fruit trees use common names, while most ornamentals use botanical names).
  • •If a plant has a special variety name (cultivar), that must be on the label too.

Example

You buy a fruit tree from a garden store.

The label must say the common name (like 'Apple Tree') and the specific type (like 'Granny Smith'). If it doesn’t, the store is breaking the law.
