§ 39382 Margarine Package Labeling Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Big containers of margarine or spreads must have clear labels on the outside.
  • •The label must say 'margarine,' 'dairy spread,' or 'spread' in big letters (at least 36-point size).
  • •The label must also include the name and address of who made or sold it in smaller but still clear letters (at least pica size).
  • •This rule is for big packages used for shipping, not the small ones you buy in stores.

Example

A company ships a big box of margarine to a grocery store.

The big box must have 'margarine' written in big letters on the outside, along with the company's name and address in smaller letters. If they don’t do this, they could get in trouble.
