§ 36004 Milk Product Quality Dates

Key Takeaways

  • •Stores must put a 'use by' date on milk and cream so you know when it's best to drink it.
  • •This rule is for milk, cream, and other milk products sold in stores, but not for milk sold directly by farmers or in big shipments.
  • •The date must be easy to see and understand on the package.
  • •The government can make more rules about how and where to put this date.

Example

You buy a carton of milk from the grocery store.

The carton must have a clear 'use by' date printed on it so you know when the milk might start to taste bad. If it doesn’t have this date, the store is breaking the rules.
