§ 36001 Milk Container Labeling Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •All milk sold in stores must have a label with its grade (like 'Grade A').
  • •If the milk is not pasteurized (not heated to kill germs), it must say 'raw'.
  • •If the milk is pasteurized (heated to kill germs), it must say 'pasteurized'.
  • •The label must also show who packed or sold the milk, including their name, address, or a special license number.

Example

You buy a bottle of milk at the grocery store.

The bottle must have a label that says if it's 'Grade A' milk, whether it's 'pasteurized' or 'raw', and who packed or sold it. If it doesn’t have this info, the store or milk company could get in trouble.
