§ 6724 Candidate Ballot Withdrawal

Key Takeaways

  • •If someone running for president changes their mind, they can tell the state they don’t want to run anymore.
  • •They have to do this at least 68 days before the primary election.
  • •If they do this on time, their name won’t be on the ballot.
  • •This rule helps keep the ballot clean and fair for voters.

Example

A person named John says he wants to run for president, but later decides he doesn’t want to.

If John tells the state 68 days before the primary that he’s not running, his name won’t be on the ballot. This way, people won’t vote for someone who isn’t actually running.
