§ 89530 Employee Termination Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •Dismissal means getting fired for a good reason, like doing something really bad at work.
  • •Layoff means losing your job because the company doesn’t have enough money or work.
  • •Probation is like a trial period at a new job—you’re not permanent yet.
  • •Permanent means you can keep your job unless you get fired or laid off.

Example

If you work at a store and they don’t have enough customers, they might lay you off.

This means you lose your job not because you did something wrong, but because the store doesn’t have enough work or money.
