§ 79205 Calworks Child Care Subsidies

Key Takeaways

  • •Money for cheap child care is only for kids of CalWORKs parents. They can use it at school centers or get vouchers to pick their own place.
  • •CalWORKs parents can only get cheap child care if they're in a work or school program to get off welfare. It lasts until they finish their first school plan, plus 3 more months or until the school year ends—whichever is longer.
  • •Money for work-study jobs can only go to employers who are part of school work-study programs or give jobs that help students learn and meet work rules. The school pays up to 75% of the wages, and the employer pays at least 25%.
  • •CalWORKs parents can only use work-study money if their total hours of school, work, and work-study meet the rules for how much they need to work.

Example

A single mom is in CalWORKs and goes to community college. She has a 4-year-old kid and works part-time at the school library through work-study.

The school can help pay for her kid’s daycare while she’s in class or at her work-study job. The daycare help stops after she finishes her first school plan, but she gets 3 extra months or until the school year ends. For her work-study job, the school pays most of her wages, but the library still has to pay at least 25%. She has to make sure her total hours of school, work, and work-study meet the CalWORKs work rules.
