§ 79204 Calworks Student Support Services

Key Takeaways

  • •Community colleges get extra money to help CalWORKs students (people getting welfare) with special services.
  • •These services help students get better jobs and become independent, like job training, child care, and help finding work.
  • •Only current or recent CalWORKs students (up to 2 years after leaving the program) can get these services.
  • •The money must be used for new help, not to replace existing services.

Example

A single mom on CalWORKs wants to go to community college to become a nurse but needs help with child care and job training.

The college can use this extra money to pay for her child care while she’s in class and give her job training to help her find a nursing job after she graduates.
