§ 71003 Board Vacancy Appointments

Key Takeaways

  • •If a spot on the board opens up (except for student, faculty, or one special employee spot), the Governor picks someone new, but the Senate has to agree with two-thirds of its members saying yes.
  • •If a student, faculty, or that special employee spot opens up, the Governor picks someone new without needing the Senate to agree.
  • •The new person only stays in the spot until the original term ends—they don’t get a full new term.

Example

Imagine a board member quits before their time is up.

The Governor picks a new person for that spot. If it’s a regular member, the Senate has to vote and at least two-thirds must say yes. If it’s a student or teacher spot, the Governor just picks someone new. The new person only stays until the original term ends.
